Vintage 40s South American finely woven wool poncho with fringe. Pull over style with open sides. A gorgeous example of the weaving styles of the Americas. Rustic & well-loved. This came from the estate of a UC Berkeley professor whose family imported coffee from South America. They traveled extensively throughout the region purchasing textiles from various tribes. A handwritten list of tribes to visit for different types of textiles was found among their belongings. This is a REALLY FINE example of traditional weaving & is likely from a Peruvian or Brazilian tribe. They kept it hanging on the wall as a work of art but it can also be worn.
